About

The Attaragollewa Buddha, located at the Buduruwayaya temple near Bakamuna in Sri Lanka’s Polonnaruwa District, is a remarkable rock-cut reclining Buddha statue from the Polonnaruwa period (11th-12th centuries CE). Measuring 12 meters in length, it is one of the three colossal reclining Buddha statues in Sri Lanka, alongside those at Gal Vihara and Tantirimale, and depicts the Buddha in Parinirvana, symbolizing his final passing into Nirvana. Carved directly into a granite rock face, this Theravada Buddhist sculpture is the smallest and most weathered of the trio, yet it retains significant historical and spiritual value. Though less visited by tourists, its serene setting and intricate craftsmanship make it a compelling testament to ancient Sinhalese artistry and devotion.
