About

Seruwawila, located in Sri Lanka’s Trincomalee District, is a historically and religiously significant village, approximately 30 miles south of Trincomalee town. It is renowned for the Seruwawila Mangala Raja Maha Vihara, an ancient Buddhist temple believed to have been established in the 2nd century BCE. The temple houses the sacred forehead relic of Lord Buddha, making it a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists. According to legend, the stupa was constructed by King Kavantissa, a ruler of the Ruhuna Kingdom, to enshrine this revered relic. The site, surrounded by lush paddy fields and serene landscapes, reflects a blend of cultural and spiritual heritage. Despite being affected by ethnic conflicts during the Sri Lankan Civil War, Seruwawila remains a symbol of resilience and devotion, attracting devotees and visitors seeking spiritual solace and historical insight.
