Sangamankanda Point, located in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province, is the island’s easternmost point, situated in the small village of Sangaman Kanda near Pottuvil. Known for its pristine, unspoiled beaches that can stretch up to 100 meters wide, it offers a serene coastal landscape with calm seas, ideal for swimming and surfing. The point features a historic lighthouse, built in 1947 at a height of 25 feet, though it was partially destroyed by the 2004 tsunami, leaving only 15 feet standing. Nearby, a small hillock hosts ruins of an ancient Buddhist monastery, including a dilapidated stupa and drip-ledge caves with possible Vedda cave art, adding historical depth. Accessible via narrow gravel roads off the Pottuvil-Kalmunai route, it’s a tranquil destination for hiking, camping, and photography, best navigated with Google Maps due to limited signage.
