About

Barandiya Kovil or Barandi Kovil, a historic Hindu temple in Seethawaka (Avissawella), Kegalle District, Sri Lanka. This ruined temple, the only surviving stone monument from the 16th-century Sitavaka Kingdom, is believed to have been built during the reign of King Rajasinghe I (1581–1593 AD), possibly dedicated to the goddess Kali. Constructed in the South Indian Vijayanagar architectural style, it features intricately carved stone blocks, flower and leaf designs, and a canal linking it to the Sitawaka Ganga River. Local folklore suggests Rajasinghe I, after converting to Hinduism, built the temple to atone for the sin of patricide. Though devastated by Portuguese invaders and never fully completed, its archaeological significance is recognized, with the nearby stone bridge declared a protected monument in 2007
